RS Taichi Drymaster Explorer : Boken-Sha

Hey Guys, wassup. No this isn’t the name of one of the rulers who came to conquer India. Explorer in Japanese is Boken-Sha. Why am I giving this Gyaan? well RS Taichi finally managed to send us their flagship riding gear series the Drymaster Explorer Jacket and Pants, and dil garden garden ho gaya. 

Being in that category of rider that loves to tour this was really interesting and seeing such a lovely option being the Christmas present though only for a review was overwhelming. Moment I got a call of its arrival I rushed to the office to have a look. It was love at 1st sight. 

I wore it just to have a feel and it was bliss. Maybe like getting into the costume of your favorite Superhero. Most actors complain that the Costume wasn’t comfortable. Well not the case here. Typical long semi snug touring jacket. 

Let’s have a look in Detail. 

I went for a ride, obviously wearing it. And it was quite warm so I got rid of the inner winter liner. I’ll come back to that later. While riding the jacket felt so in place. No need for time to get adjusted. It was a bit on the cooler side in the morning and the cold wind protection was pretty decent. 

A nice comfortable ( absolute key factor) feel. The material inside is soft and especially not sticky when it is sweaty. For People like me who have a sweat allergy it’s a two thumbs up. 

But as the day really started to set it, Goa being Goa , it started to get hot. So much so that in an open place you could have enough solar panels to run a 5 star hotel. Thats when i realised the advantage of the Explorer. Yes its a touring jacket and supposed to be a rain jacket. And We all know that Rain jackets are good in rain and keep you dry but make you wet in the summer to to heat and Sweat. 

But the Drymaster Explorer has an ace up its sleeves or rather near the chest area. Foldable flaps for exposing vents. And a zipper at the rear that opens one big flap for the flow of air. This is there on each side in the front, and the folding and mounting of the flap is a piece of cake. Good part is that the front flat can be folded even while wearing the jacket. For the rear you may need someone’s help or have a really flexible body. 

This came really handy and it showed the truly universal nature of the Explorer. Now I was also curious about the water evading nature. So when I Stopped for chai, I asked the vendor to hold the jacket at one end as I held at the other and his little kid was more than happy to pour some water. Only to realise that magic. The water did not go through as a matter of fact collected on the surface. It was a sight to watch that child completely awestruck. 

I was thinking to myself. These Japs are really taking their reputation a bit too seriously. I have a friend who is so fascinated by Japs as he literally goes hammer and thong when he hears the word. 

Now some small details. Even the outer pockets are water proof with a well lengthen foldable flap. So your precious iphone or Galaxy wont get wet. And RS Taichi’s attention to detail with the reflectors is admirable. As for us Indians not many roads are well lit and the light reflector can be a matter of life and death. You also have a loop on the left flap to hang your keys or something precious. 

Now let’s move on to Protection. I mean that is the whole point of having a riding jacket. This is a textile jacket so the abrasion level is pretty good. The protectors on shoulder and elbow are CE level 2 certified. There is foam protection for the back but you can purchase better armour from RS Taichi itself. One of the provisions I personally loved is the provision for this Jacket to attach a chest protector. Not many touring jackets have it. It’s normally on the sportier jackets. 

Now getting to the winter liner. This truly is attention to detail. This liner need not work only as a liner. It is designed in such a way that it can be worn as an individual entity. A friend came along and she wore it the entire time. Also I feel she was born in the Sahara to endure the heat.
